Differentiation and Assessment

Every child is unique and will come to my classroom with his or her own set of
circumstances. I feel it is my job as an educator to understand the individual
differences of my students and tailor classroom activities to appropriately meet
the needs of each of them. Lessons will be presented in a variety of ways in
order to appeal to the various learning styles of my students. Thoughtful
questioning will be used to invoke higher levels of thinking. Children will be
encouraged to share their strategies with the group so that others may learn new
ways of solving problems. Activities during centers will have varying degrees
of difficulty at which they may be completed, and students will be able to
decide the task that is appropriately leveled for them.
Continuous assessment will be a vital tool I use to guide instruction in my classroom. I will use authentic assessment tools, such as anecdotal notes and student portfolios, to monitor the progress of each child and adjust the curriculum as needed. Thorough observations will allow me to know the current level of each student, differentiate instruction based on student levels, and address any stalls in development. While students will have some autonomy in their learning, I will also use collected data to measure their progress and push them to reach for higher levels of accomplishment.
