Rights and Responsibilities
I believe it is important to clearly define the expectations for my students. Desired behaviors will be recognized and rewarded, and consequences will be in place for unwanted behaviors. Following is a sample behavior system I might implement in my classroom based on a dog theme.
Dog House Rules Pawsitive attitude every day Always be kind and accepting of others Work to the best of your ability Safe hands and feet During the first two weeks of class and as needed throughout the year, we would go through the rules together. Students would be given different scenarios and asked if they were examples of "paws"itive behaviors or negative behaviors. Visual reminders of "paws"itive behaviors would remain posted in the classroom. In the classroom there would be a behavior chart similar to the one pictured on the left. Every student would receive a dog with their name on it that would be attached to a clothespin. All dogs would start out at the dog park each day. Additionally, each student would have a dog biscuit stamp card. Individual Rewards When students exhibit "paws"itive behaviors, they will be able to move their dog to the "bone"a fide excellent behavior section of the chart. Students whose dog is on this section at the end of the day will receive two stamps on their dog biscuit. Those who end the day at the dog park will receive one stamp on their dog biscuit. Once a student has ten stamps on a dog biscuit, he or she will get to select a prize from the biscuit box. Some of the prizes will include: pencils, stickers, erasers, and markers. Students will also receive verbal praise, high fives, and positive notes or phone calls. Group Rewards As the classroom receives compliments or exhibits positive group behaviors, they will receive dog bones in our classroom dog bowl. Once the bowl is full the class will receive a reward, such as a special treat or an extra ten minutes at recess. Consequences When a student makes a poor choice, the following will occur: 1st time - Verbal warning 2nd time - Move dog pin on behavior chart to "chew on it." Student will be asked to stop and think about the choices he or she is making. 3rd time - Move dog pin on behavior chart to "in the doghouse." Student will lose 5 minutes at recess. 4th time - Note outlining behavior will be sent home for parent signature. Student will lose entire afternoon recess. |
